**The 10x Chromium Next GEM technology** partitions cells or nuclei into droplets containing uniquely barcoded beads called GEMs (Gel Bead-In Emulsions). The incorporation of a unique barcode into each cDNA/DNA fragment, allows each fragment to be traced back to the cell or nucleus of origin. By profiling thousands of cells simultaneously, the 10x Next GEM technology enables the unraveling of transcriptional and cellular heterogeneity within a cell population. The high number of profiled cells allows for the detection of even rare cell types within a complex sample.

**Interested in feature barcoding? See our table below.**

## 10x Genomics Library Preparation Service

[Reference 10x Genomics Support Page for details of specific assays.](https://www.10xgenomics.com/support)

**Library Preparation**

We routinely run samples as a service on the Chromium X for single cell [RNAseq](https://www.10xgenomics.com/support/single-cell-gene-expression), [ATAC](https://www.10xgenomics.com/support/single-cell-atac), and [Multiome](https://www.10xgenomics.com/support/single-cell-multiome-atac-plus-gene-expression) assays. The core can support [any of the 10x Genomics Chromium X and CytAssist assays](https://www.10xgenomics.com/support). If you do not see your assay of interest listed, [contact us to inquire](mailto:illumina_submission-list@lists.fas.harvard.edu;%20creardon@cgr.harvard.edu) or [schedule an in-depth consultation](/consultation-request-form "Consultation & Estimate Request Form") to determine which preparation may be the best fit for your samples.

## 10x Genomics Training

**Training** We also provide training for self-run use of the Chromium Controller instrument. Training consists of using non-functional reagents to **learn to load the 10x chip**. During run times, before and after training, we will review the protocol, cell prep, timing, and any other questions you may have. Each person must complete this training and submit a minilims request to gain access. Training can be anywhere **between 1-2 hours,** depending on the number of attendees. If you have >2 attendees, it is recommend to split up into groups of 2 to keep the training length to 2 hours. For more information about the technology, please visit [10x Genomics](https://www.10xgenomics.com/support). To schedule a training, [submit a request form](/training-request-form).

## 10x Genomics Feature Barcoding

These are “features” available for the barcoding of samples. There are a few available, some that are officially supported by 10x Genomics and others that are not. The Bauer Core can help to run both with the understanding that non-supported features have limited support. Below you will find the terminology, compatibly, and additional details.
